What Is Processing Speed (Gs)? How to Improve Cognitive Speed, and Its Limits

Processing speed (Gs) is how quickly and accurately you handle work that is not difficult. In CHC theory it is one of the broad abilities alongside fluid reasoning (Gf) and crystallized intelligence (Gc), and it contributes directly to a composite IQ score. This article covers what it is and how to improve it, separating claims by strength of evidence.

What processing speed measures

On standard tests like the WAIS, processing speed is measured with tasks such as coding (transcribing symbols against a key) and symbol search. Each individual item is easy; what is being assessed is not difficulty but how much you can process accurately within a time limit.

In the CHC hierarchy this ability sits as one of the broad abilities beneath g. It looks unglamorous, but slow processing reduces how much information you can handle in a given period, which drags down performance on any task requiring reasoning or working memory.

Speed is not reasoning ability

The important thing is not to conflate processing speed with reasoning. Being fast is not the same as being smart. Handling simple work quickly and spotting complex rules (fluid reasoning) are correlated but separate abilities.

People who think slowly and reason exceptionally well are not rare. At the same composite IQ, someone with high speed and average reasoning and someone with the reverse have entirely different profiles.

The ability most affected by aging

Processing speed is where age effects appear earliest and most clearly among cognitive abilities. Studies consistently report a peak in the 20s followed by a gradual, continuing decline.

Crystallized intelligence — vocabulary and general knowledge — meanwhile keeps growing into the 50s and 60s. The familiar sense that 'thinking slows with age but judgment improves' is cleanly explained by the difference between those two curves (see IQ and age).

What training does and does not transfer to

Evidence for processing-speed training is comparatively better than for cognitive training in general. Repeating reaction-time and visual-search tasks clearly improves performance on those tasks and similar ones.

How far the gains carry, however, is limited. Near transfer — from the trained task to closely similar tasks — happens readily, while far transfer to intelligence in general or to overall day-to-day performance is limited. This pattern is common to cognitive training as a whole.

Remove what is suppressing your measured speed first

Removing the factors temporarily depressing your processing speed pays off faster than training. Three have relatively consistent evidence:

  • Sleep deprivation: directly affects reaction speed and sustained attention; even one or two hours short produces a measurable drop
  • Aerobic exercise: regular exercise is frequently reported to support the maintenance of cognitive function
  • Multitasking: every task switch incurs a cost, lowering effective speed

What it means during a test

On a timed IQ test, processing speed shows up as time allocation. The most common way to lose points is burning the clock on a hard item and dropping later questions you could have solved.
