What Are the Traits of People With High IQ? Research-Backed Tendencies and Caveats

Search for the traits of high-IQ people and you'll find plenty of sweeping personality claims. But IQ measures only a part of cognitive ability, and even the so-called traits vary widely from person to person. Here, we separate the tendencies that tend to be relatively well supported by research from the caveats you shouldn't take too far.

Tendency 1: They learn new things quickly

People with high IQ scores are reported to grasp unfamiliar concepts and rules with fewer attempts. This is thought to be because the general factor of intelligence (the g factor) is associated with learning efficiency across tasks. For more on the g factor, see our explanation of the g factor.

That said, learning quickly and understanding deeply over time are different things. Without sustained interest and effort, a high score won't take you far.

Tendency 2: They are good at abstract, pattern-based thinking

Performing well on tasks that involve spotting regularities in figures or logical relationships is another commonly cited trait. This is really just the flip side of the fact that IQ tests measure abstract reasoning above all. You can get a feel for what these tasks are like with our pattern recognition problems.

Tendency 3: They sometimes have a larger working memory capacity

The ability to hold and manipulate multiple pieces of information in your head at once (working memory) is known to correlate with reasoning and reading comprehension. High-IQ people tend to have a larger capacity here, but this too varies between individuals and is influenced by training.

Caveat: IQ does not guarantee success or define personality

The most important point is that correlation is not causation. Even though there is a loose correlation between IQ and income or academic achievement, success is determined by many factors such as home environment, health, interpersonal skills, and persistence. Creativity, integrity, and empathy cannot be measured by IQ. Many of the "IQ ◯◯" figures attributed to famous people are also unsourced folklore and should not be taken at face value.
